Lets keep the brooms in the closet for this one. Game 4.

This game was too close to call. I couldnt really tell if the pens were sucking, they just had one of those games, or if the flyers just shut them down.
First, the flyers stormed to a 3-0 lead. I think the flyers were playing a good game offensively, but an okay game defensively. The pens werent playing badly, but it looked like one of those games when your passes are quite right, youre shooting off target, and youre not getting the bounces your way. Biron was on his game too. Believe it or not, fleury was making some great saves, so it wasnt the goalies fault completely. At the end of the 1st period, i looked at my grandma and said "You know, im not all that concerned." She responded she wasnt either. Point being, the pens were playing 100% and being beaten, but they couldnt get going and the flyers were playing a good game themselves.
At the end of the 2nd period, down 3-0, i said the same that i wasnt too much more concerned. The pens have a roster to rival an all star team, they play with such unity and love for each other, and the have the star in their eye as soemone winning the stanley cup in their driveway by taking the hard red mylec balls and roofing with a plastic bladed stick on their neighbor wearing franklin goalie pads. I feel these boys are feeling like making some history.
Staal scored two goals relatively quickly by his line mates getting the puck down low, keeping possession, and then passing it to the slot for the goal. Fundamental hockey really. The pens got within 1 goal and eventually pulled the goalie and the flyers put it in the empty net.
The vibe i got from the beginning of the game before they decided to play was, maybe they wanted to sell another 17k tickets to about 7k fair weather fans (when the pens were losing, they typically sold 10k/game) and some concessions. earlier, i called the pens in 6. i was anticipating the pens to hold a 2-1 series lead, then 3-1, then 3-2 and win the series in philly. now, i think we may close it at the igloo, rightfully so.
Im not concerned with the pens loss, penalties hurt them early and they didnt have the spark early on. Im looking forward to getting upset at the commentary sunday at 3pm on nbc for the end of the series.
Side note, i miss the first union center the flyers used to play in...nothing was better than talking about the flyers playing in the appropriately named F.U. Center....what more would you expect from Filthadelphia?

Versus, you are breaking my balls. Game 3

So now versus has decided to call this series the PA Cold War. Which make sense (wait for it, here comes the sarcasm, wait for it.....OK!!!!!) because of the high number of russians in the series, which is gonchar and malkin only, and it becasue of the lack of action in the series. Look, i understand, because ice is cold and the series is war, whatever. Point being, you are not mike lang, staggy, or bob errey. If eddie o' didnt wasnt on your show, i would probably mute you and listen to lang hammered on the 1059 the X yelling about scratching his back with a hacksaw.
Wheres KBL and pensvision when you needed, yeah, that is the equivalent of bringing sexy back old school pens style, TIMBERLAKE HOLLA!

Less we revisit put it on the net and see what happens, hey now ryan whitney, way to pull the crosby from game 2(1st period on the pp off the d deflection pens up 1-0)
So you scored 5 mins into the game in philly's house, big deal....Hossa, what say you?
nearly 3 mins later, hossa comes in the neutral zone nearly out of control, but manages to make a move on one the flyers at their blueline and uses the next flyers player, a dman, as a screen and rips the puck glove side on biron from above the circles. i dont think biron expected hossa to shoot from there. using the d as a screen, biron didnt see the rocket until it was too late. like a said though, the puck was nearly lost by hossa but he took a wrister and the pens took a 2-0 lead. unfortunately, i wasnt at the philly arena because i conveniently had a pin and i would have dropped it at the arena and it would have been heard.

The flyers bounced back with a goal from, pat mac's term, penguin killer, gionta....whoops i mean rj umberger. Rj has been for philly want gionta was for the devils. if the devils and flyers only played the pens, gionta of years past and the rj of the present umberger would win the scoring titles.

Even though they were down by one, you could tell the fans werent into it. The pens scored the first goal in each game for the first 3 games, so i think the frustration of always playing behind had really set it.

Malone scored to extend the lead in the third and hossa added an EN. Malone is having an amazing season, i just hope he remembers where hes from and what the pens did for him once his contract expires.

Desperation was the headline for this game and the flyers played another great game, but again the pens showed up to play.

Game 2 Eastern Conference Finals

First, i would like to apologize for falling behind on the reporting of the pens, please forgive me.
So the headlines for this game was the flyers will win because they lost all if their first games only to come back and take the series...well then...

So the highlight of this game in my opinion was the fight between tyler kennedy and scoot mcgoot upshall about 4 mins into the game. Upshall is a pretty tough guy and not my first choice to brawl with, but you know, take a look kennedy. That face on him, im sure has gotten him into a few fights growing up. Stats and reputation wise, id give upshall the benefit of the doubt, but ol kennedy kind of took it too him. not that upshall is a major goon, but he can bang with the best of them. they both exchanged some pretty good shots with no clear winner, but kennedy definitely didnt embarrass himself at all. i give the win to kennedy for quality of shots and biggest balls in the fight.

Now to the game, feeding of the article as crosby as the worst player in the league or something similar, crosbo did what he does best and thats put points on the stats sheet. The flyers have been fortunate the pens pp is that hot and though its not that bad. Pens pp and crosby is down low on the near boards to the right of the screen and a pens player is down low near the crease causing problems ala kevin hatcher of the pens back in 95 ish. Sid puts the puck to the net and gets a deflection off of the d's stick short side on biron. Im a firm believer in put it on the net and see what happens. I know this isnt a new concept, but i cant stress it enough. 1-0 pens.

My memory is vague on this game, again i apologize. But i think analysis of the game rather than a play by play is better anyways.

The pens came out with some fire as did the flyers. What i was most impressed with was the pens' play didnt change even as the flyers play picked up and tied the game at the end of the second. Remember, the flyers came back in all their series to win. So to be down one game was not a big deal or even unexpected. I have a little beef with malkin though. Throughout the season he would gain the blueline, excellent, and then shovel the puck to the middle of the ice just inside the blueline and someone would pick it up on our team. well the flyers have picked up on this and late in the second period with the pens on a pp, malkin does his move and richards picks it off and smokes the flower like a cigarette/weed/tree/marijuana (your choice). It was an amazing shot though. Richards ripped that shot so quickly, fleury didnt have a chance against it. His release was lightening fast and a relatively close distance, no fancy moves. The official stats has the goal unassisted, but hellen keller has credited malkin with the assist on richards goal, hellen keller, yeah it was that obvious.

Another note, the pens never really sat back once they got the lead in the 3rd. i think that is great because it shows the confidence in the d that the o can continue to do their thing and score some more while the d holds in down like michael jackson on a 13 yr old boy.

Flyers picked up their game, but the pens one upped them again. i have a feeling this is how the rest of the playoffs is going to go. at this point, i know the pens are up 3-1 in games, but i think we can one up the west team (dallas/detroit) for the cup.

PA Civil War??? Super Lame Versus! Anyways, Game 1

Three things, one, Versus called this series the PA Civil War. I think its gay, i like the Turnpike series...draw your own conclusions.
Two, Timonen was out with a blood clot. It one thing to bruised and not playing, but this is serious, so get well. As of now he's out for the rest of playoffs or as a pens fan says, 5 more games (Pens in 6). Hope all is well, hockey is just a a game...i cringed a little when i said "just a game".
Three, ive got major problems with Alan Robinson. This idiot said Crosby is content with being the playmaker of the team rather than the goal scorer. Furthermore, he says Crosby hasnt done enough in the playoffs and he needs to score more. First, when ol' crosbo won the scoring title, guess what, he wasnt close for goals...why!? because he is a playmaker. He's not content with it, its what he does. I would rather have a playmaker than someone who scores goals because that means someone else is scoring too. Crosby makes others around him better. He will get his goals here and there and then feed goals to everyone else on the ice. Point being, i would rather Crosby have 10 goals and 95 assists than 105 goals because that means crosby isnt carry the team and it shows depth. Mr Robinson, in your next article, please tell us about how fleury is playing poorly because he is 9-1, thanks.
Minus the fact the flyers are a great team, this is a series to look forward to for sure. I dont need to say anything more than that.
Both teams came out flying. Pens struck first from a goal by Sykora from Malone and Malkin. Malkin fed it to malone and Sykora deked biron to the backhand on the short side. Such a nice play, the funny part was malkin came to celebrate with sykora but sykora was so excited about the play and pass that he kind of avoided malkin until malone came. Flyers answered back with two goals by richards and it stayed that way until hossa picked a blind pass from biron on the far boards and threw it to crosby in the front of the net. Crosbo just had to get a stick on it and its in. The go ahead goal came from malkin and the gang as they had a final rush for the first period. Malkin got the puck coming down the the right side and took the "signature, now common though, messier one-footed wrist shot" to beat biron far side under the blocker.
Second period was another philly/pit playoff period.
Hits back and forth, everybody was throwing their bodies. The last goal of the game came from gonchar ripping a pass from the top of the defensive circle to malkin on the opposing blueline, check youtube for this goal, malkin got about 10-15 feet from the goal and took a slapshot past biron, by the way it was shorthanded. If you have ever played NHL 92-94 on Genesis, take a breakaway with al iafrate (WSH Caps) against the Senators and take a slap shot once you get between the dots and see if you score.....this is about what happened. It was comical because he didnt even make a move, nothing, just rubber at 90 mph. The rest of the game was scoreless with plenty of attempts from both sides.
The highlight of the game for me was after letang took a cross-check to the back after the whistle and malkin didnt like it. So malkin grabbed the guy, in turn darien hatcher grabbed malkin by the head and a pens guy grabbed hatcher. malkin got loose the faced washed hatcher while the other penguin was holding him. hatcher was defenseless and malkin to the liberty of a couple face jabs to hatcher. malkin got a roughing penalty, big deal. malkin's penalty was the equivilence of me walking up to mike tyson, kicking him in the balls, and tyson asking me not to do that again and would forgive me if i said i was sorry.... and tyson gives me a new 5 dollar bill with the purple ink on the back.
The pens played well, but i dont think the flyers were there 100%. I think when the flyers play 100%, the pens will match and then beat the play of the flyers. This is the eastern conference finals. The flyers are real. Im calling the pens in 6.
Im not going to analyze the pens in this game. After sundays match, ill be on top of it. Too many variables for this game. Game two is going to be big in terms of how the teams play.

Peace out gangsters.

EZ Pass Series thoughts

While Hossa came through big in game 5...i think crosby is going to miss armstrong against the flyers. The flyers have terrorized crosby this season and i can only hope dupuis picks up some of the slack from missing armstrong.

Keys to the series.

  1. Fleury continuing to stand on his head or break Biron. Either/or.
  2. Malkin, enough said.
  3. Third line scoring.
  4. Powerplay needs to get better, not that its bad, but it should be better.

Reflecting on last series, good job to the rangers on shutting down the pens transition into the attack zone. The trap was as good as the Devils used to be, yeah as good, but the pens are that much better to adapt and still win games.

Next game wins.

To sum up the game: wow.

The biggest downfall of the game, as well as many of the penguin playoff games, was it was not on FSN-P. NBC, wheres Hull? What did you give me? Mike "Doc" Emrick? For serial? (Thanks Al Gore from South Park). I didnt know if this guy should do the play by play or diversify my investment portfolio. My grandma even said she didnt like him...not kidding. Anyways, NBC did give a few glimpse of Eddie O, thanks to all goodness. EO, way to toot your own horn about calling Franzen of the Wings the biggest surprise of the playoffs before the playoffs started.Good call eddie and im glad you were as upset with them as i was.

And now to the game....
The pens definitely brought their game as did the rangers. If this same rangers team showed up for the earlier games, we would be looking towards a seven game series. Both teams came out flying with their advantage going to pit, though the game was then taken over by nyr. The first period was a wash.
Second period was all pens. The rangers were flat and the pens were flying. Malkin drew a penalty and the pens capitalized it. Hey everyone who calls crosby a diver,....HUSTLE draws penalties. Feet moving when the other player's are not....penalty, plain and simple. Hossa's first goal was on the powerplay. The pp was switched up a little different, there was malone in the slot. Malone moved up the slot as he called for the puck. As he recieved the puck, the d collapsed on him and hossa grabbed post and slammed home the pass from malone. The key here was malone making the pass to freeze lundqvist as lundo couldnt make a play on hossa. Malkin's goal was his "Euro/olympic sized ice carrying it in the zone" play the d poked checked but malkin stayed with it and blindedly threw t to the net and roofed it on lundvqvist. Luck. No problems here though. I think the pens should have 60 shots a game rather than a high shooting percentage. The pens get two goals but couldnt deliver the knockout goal of a 3 goal lead. Two goal leads are about as safe as unprotected sex with Brett Michaels or chewing on a painted toy from China, your call. The pens close the second period with solidness and the rangers looked like they have had enough.
Enter third period. 20 mins away from the flyers in the conference finals and the rangers exploded. With the mixture of gatorade and crack, only available in ny (go figure), the rangers stormed back in the first 4 mins of the third. The ranger goals were from crashing the net and getting traffic towards the net. The pens laid back and couldnt/didnt deal the blow of the series. From regulation to overtime was game seven playoff hockey. The pens had the upper hand but both teams had great opportunity. I give play of the game during this time to fleury. A shot from the point was deflected down and completely knocked off fleury's timing on the save but he still managed to close the five-hole to make the save. Without this save the next game is at msg.
Overtime: Pens started the overtime with the balance of the double minor high-sticking call on drury whom was wacked with a stick to the check earlier in the game and had to leave for stitches with out a penalty called on malone. The pens had some good chances but couldnt put it in. Finally a broken play on the blueline from crosby to dupuis as the defenseman picked the pass but couldnt clear it. Dupuis picked the puck up, put it on net , but was blocked and went right to hossa for the the home run ball.

Great game and exciting to watch from both sides. The rangers showed their true quality this game but the pens just one upped them. Pens looked good.
Get out the EZ pass boys, its a turnpike series.

Where I'm picking up...

So the pens are up 3 to 1 in games and have the Eddie O' on tap to cover game 5 at the igloo. Home ice advantage... the pens have won 20 of the last 24 or so games at home. Yeah it matters. The igloo is loud. Also, this place was built in the late 60s, the hospitality and convenience is not there for the away team. The only thing they have to look forward to in the only arena the pens franchise ever played in are the world class nachos and cheese.
The pens didnt win at MSG all year, so to extend the unbeaten streak to 7 at the gardens was great. To drop game 4 was not "unexpected". Game 5 is depending on the pens if they want to close out the series. If the pens play a half-hearted game and the rangers bring their game to the igloo...the rangers will tie the series at msg and game seven could devastating to the pens.
I believe game 5 is a must win for the pens.

You asked, I answered.

Warning, here comes a Robert ramble:
Okay Pat. Ill do my best to roundup the games from a die hard and fair pens fan. For everyone else in case you are reading this... Im 23yr/m and a huge pens fan since '93. Ive been playing hockey since 93 also...so i know how the game works. When the pens lose, i'm there, when they win, i'm there. Doesnt matter.
I know what its like to leave the igloo after a game seven loss to the Florida Panthers as the panthers go to the cup.
I have watched the pens drop 40 some games in a season. Long sotry short, i love pens hockey.

Ive been blessed to see Mario, Wayne, Roy, Jagr, Crosby, Malkin, Kovalev, Gilmore, Ulf, Leetch, Straka, Lalime (first games), Pavel, and others in person on the ice.

Side note:i rarely use the term Mellon Arena, because, well, its the Civic Arena or Igloo.

In summary, Pat is in Afghnistan holding it down for the US of A and the pens are on a pretty mean tear through the grind we so kindly refer to as the NHL playoffs. Pat thinks the pens are going to take the cup since he is in afghanistan and he wants to know how the pens played/are playing from a real perspective rather than nhl.com's sid the kid the savior the Godsend the global warming solving-interview all the time because he is the only player on the pens view. Not that crosbo isnt amazing, but i think they want to be his girlfriend if you know what i mean. If malkin and ty didnt go crazy the second half of the season, the pens may have had the same fate as the bruins. Less not forgot the flyers skidded for 10 games and nearly missed the playoffs. Not that the flyers arent good, but as they say here down in morgantown, wv...(Owen) Schmitt Happens!
This is where i step in.
Hope you enjoy it Pat.
